The Cuban Arts Group was born from the tireless philanthropic spirit of Susie and Mitchell Rice. What began as their personal Cuban art collection soon grew into a deep, ongoing relationship with Cuban culture and its artists. As their collection expanded, so did their commitment to sharing the creativity, talent, and stories of Cuban artists with broader audiences.

My first encounter with The Rice Collection goes back to my days in Havana, when I worked as an assistant at Esterio Segura’s studio. It was through the curatorial vision of Gabriela Azcuy that I first connected with the beautiful initiative of The Cuban Arts Group.

In celebration of The Cuban Arts Group 10th anniversary, we’re sharing testimonies and memories from artists, curators, and collaborators. Thank you to Dayneris Brito for her collaboration over the years.

What I like most about Susie and Mitchell Rice’s collection—aside from the quality of the works and the artists—is what they have done with it. In just over ten years, they have turned a private collection into a public event that reaches beyond the Island, while actively seeking visibility for Cuban art and artists.
