I’m deeply honored to share my experience receiving support from The Cuban Arts Group. Over the past ten years, this organization has played a key role in giving visibility to Cuban art and culture. Their work has opened spaces for dialogue, exhibition, and collaboration where many Cuban and diasporic artists have been able to share our voices. What I admire most is that it’s not just about showcasing art, it’s about building community and fostering conversations that cross borders and generations. It’s rare to see such equitable support for both established and emerging artists alike.
I first came across the institution while working with curator Yudinela Ortega on my solo exhibition A Long Hug. The group’s Chief Director, Gaby Azcuy, didn’t hesitate to support the production. Their financial contribution made it possible to showcase the video-performance that gave the exhibition its title, and I was incredibly grateful for that trust and belief in my work.
As funding opportunities for artists of color and immigrants in the United States become increasingly challenging, knowing that The Cuban Arts Group continues its decade-long mission brings peace of mind. It reminds us of the vital importance of organizations that not only recognize our creative voices but also empower them to thrive.
