Cuando pienso en los acontecimientos que marcaron nuestro camino como artistas, The Cuban Arts Group y Susie y Mitchell Rice siempre aparecen en el centro de esa historia. Su apoyo llegó en momentos clave y cambió por completo la dirección de nuestro desarrollo artístico.

Conocimos a Susie y Mitchell en 2014, gracias a la mediación de David Horta y Collin Laverty, quienes nos presentaron a esta familia que desde entonces ha acompañado, de manera generosa y cercana, el crecimiento de muchos artistas cubanos. Desde ese momento, nuestro vínculo con ellos se ha mantenido a través de Gaby Azcuy, siempre atenta, amable y comprometida con cada proyecto que llevamos adelante.

En 2016, gracias a su apoyo, participé en un curso de verano en The Washington School of Ballet. Fue una experiencia inolvidable: perfeccioné mi técnica en ballet clásico y contemporáneo, e incluso interpreté fragmentos de obras del coreógrafo Trey McIntyre, algo muy especial para mí en aquella etapa tan temprana de mi formación como bailarín.

Durante mi estancia en Washington, The Cuban Arts Group también nos facilitó herramientas fundamentales para continuar desarrollando nuestro trabajo artístico. Entre ellas, una computadora portátil que marcó el inicio de una nueva etapa creativa para mi hermano y para mí. Con ese medio comencé a experimentar con el video, el sonido y la edición, descubriendo mi interés por la video danza. Esa curiosidad me llevó a explorar nuevas formas de creación y a entender el movimiento desde otro lugar. Fruto de esas primeras búsquedas nació mi primer solo, Transfiguración, estrenado en Fábrica de Arte Cubano en 2018.

Más adelante, gracias a la mediación de Philippe Murcia, entonces agregado cultural de la Embajada de Francia en Cuba, mis primeros trabajos en video —junto con Transfiguración— llegaron a la dirección del Ballet Preljocaj. En 2019, tuve la oportunidad de colaborar con el Ballet Preljocaj Junior en Francia. Aquello fue un punto de inflexión: asistir a festivales, conocer coreógrafos y bailarines de distintas partes del mundo amplió mi mirada sobre la danza contemporánea y sobre mí mismo como creador.

Años después, en 2022, Susie y Mitchell volvieron a acompañarnos en un momento crucial: la producción de la pieza Normalización. Nos proporcionaron equipos para la edición y documentación que aún hoy seguimos utilizando. Gracias a ese apoyo, la obra pudo desarrollarse y estrenarse en Cuba, en un contexto complejo para el arte independiente, y posteriormente presentarse en el Festival Adelante en Heidelberg, Alemania, en febrero de 2024.

Su presencia constante, su confianza y su generosidad han sido una guía. No solo nos ofrecieron oportunidades, sino que creyeron en nosotros cuando apenas estábamos comenzando. Susie, Mitchel y The Cuban Art Group fueron el punto de partida de muchas cosas que hoy forman parte de nuestra carrera.

Estaremos siempre agradecidos por su fe en el arte joven y por acompañar el crecimiento de tantos artistas emergentes cubanos. Su apoyo ha dejado huellas que trascienden cualquier escenario.

When I think about the events that shaped our path as artists, The Cuban Art Group and Susie and Mitchell Rice are always at the center of that story. Their support came at key moments and completely changed the direction of our artistic development.

We met Susie and Mitchell in 2014 through David Horta and Collin Laverty, who introduced us to this family that has since generously and closely supported the growth of many Cuban artists. From that moment on, our connection with them has been maintained through Gaby Azcuy, always attentive, kind, and deeply committed to every project we have undertaken.

In 2016, thanks to their support, I participated in a summer course at The Washington School of Ballet. It was an unforgettable experience — I improved my technique in both classical and contemporary ballet and even performed excerpts from works by choreographer Trey McIntyre, which was very special for me at such an early stage of my training as a dancer.

During my stay in Washington, The Cuban Art Group also provided us with essential tools to continue developing our artistic work, including a laptop that marked the beginning of a new creative stage for my brother and me. With it, I began experimenting with video, sound, and editing, discovering my interest in video dance. That curiosity led me to explore new forms of creation and to understand movement from a different perspective. From those first explorations came my first solo piece, Transfiguración, premiered at Fábrica de Arte Cubano in 2018.

Later, through the mediation of Philippe Murcia, then Cultural Attaché of the French Embassy in Cuba, my early video works — along with Transfiguración — reached the Ballet Preljocaj team. In 2019, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Ballet Preljocaj Junior in France. That experience was a turning point: attending festivals and meeting choreographers and dancers from around the world broadened my vision of contemporary dance and of myself as a creator.

Years later, in 2022, Susie and Mitchell once again supported us at a crucial moment — the production of the piece Normalización. They provided us with equipment for editing and documentation that we still use today. Thanks to that support, the work was able to be developed and premiered in Cuba, in a complex context for independent art, and later presented at the Adelante Festival in Heidelberg, Germany, in February 2024.

Their constant presence, trust, and generosity have been a guiding light. They not only offered us opportunities but also believed in us when we were just starting out. Susie, Mitchell, and The Cuban Art Group were the starting point for many things that today define our career.

We will always be grateful for their faith in young art and for accompanying the growth of so many emerging Cuban artists. Their support has left an imprint that transcends any stage.
