Repensar el museo. A solo exhibition by Esterio Segura

Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Cuba.

November, 2024 - October, 2025

Esterio Segura remains an artist deeply engaged with space—his works are inseparable from their site of installation. While rooted in conceptual art, his practice resists dematerialization, focusing instead on the object’s materiality and symbolic potential. Drawing from tradition and kitsch aesthetics, Segura constructs a personal visual language rich with meaning. His installations nod to Duchamp’s eroticism and the hedonistic gaze explored by Oldenburg and Warhol, while channeling the spirit of radical architecture.

In this exhibition, Segura initiates a dialogue with the museum as both institution and cultural archive. He challenges its finite space and wide-ranging mission—spanning ancient to contemporary art—by inviting reflection on its role today. His works, from a wave’s halted gesture to the stillness of a table or a nostalgic car in flight, form an archipelago of ideas that call for a rethinking of the museum and the nation it reflects.

The show includes a scale model of the exhibition, with some pieces completed in situ as part of an open, evolving process. Visitors are invited to witness and participate in the creation of meaning, reinforcing the museum’s role not just as guardian of the past, but as a site for living art.
